Character voiceover is used not only in cartoons and video
games, but also commercials for radio and television. Character voiceover is
usually the closest to the real sound and performance of an actor. This is the
"every man" read in commercials, but also the straight man in cartoons. Video game
character voice-overs can range from overly-dramatic anime voice work to realistic
voice acting (Dragon Age is a good example), but usually have an edge of drama to
them to make up for the fact you only hear the voice and cannot see the actor's
real eyes. Voiceover actors in video games are referred to as VGA.
Cartoon voiceovers by far have the widest range of performance styles. Some
voiceover artists have an innate funny voice that they use while others have built
a repertoire of 20 or so cartoon character voice overs for Disney, Nickelodeon,
Comedy Central and Fox Networks cartoon line-up.
