Definitions
of casting director on the Web: Finds the best acting talent
for a particular project.
After being advised as to the casting
requirements for a production, the Casting Director will
select
Talent for auditions, videotape the auditions, check
scheduling
conflicts and the union status of the selected Talent, and
make
recommendations for call-backs and the ultimate casting for
the production.
Since casting is such a critical element in
the value of the production to the client, the final casting
decision is made by the advertising agency or the producer
with
the client in consultation with the production company, the
Director and the Casting Director.
Individual responsible for selecting actors to play roles.
an actor's best friend.
Has their finger on the acting pulse
of the country and recommends talent « helps them come to the
attention of producers and directors.
A Casting director is a person who is in charge of the casting of
a film or other work requiring actors.
The casting process takes place during pre-production.
CASTING CATEGORIES What is CSA? The Casting Society of America was
founded in Los Angeles in February, 1982 with the intent of
establishing a recognized standard of professionalism in the
casting field and to provide it's members with a support
organization to further their goals and protect their common
interests.
The founding members of the organization (which at the time was
called the American Society of Casting Directors) were Mike Fenton,
Al Onorato and Joe Reich.
By 1983, it's membership had grown to 39 and CSA began publishing
a monthly newsletter to it's members reporting on news of interest
in the industry.
Twenty years later, it's ranks have grown to 350 of the top
casting directors in the industry.
The creative contributions of Casting Directors are now recognized
by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and since 1989,
Casting Directors have been awarded Emmy statuettes in various
Casting categories.
What is Voice Over? Voice over is the spoken word in the audio
portion of any of the following: TV commercials / RADIO commercials
CD ROM / CD Interactive Books on tape / Voices of toys Point of
purchase marketing / In-store audio Museums / Amusement parks
Animated TV series / Animated feature films Training videos /
Manuals Website voices Movie ADR / Looping Movie / TV walla
Telephone on-hold messages Airport PSA / In-flight announcements
Transportation safety announcements How does an actor secure voice
over work? Producers looking for talent will either: 1.
Contact the agents directly, by faxing out a "breakdown" of the
type of voice that they are looking for (agents record auditions or
supply voice over reference tapes to sell the appropriate
candidate), 2.
Hire a casting company to audition the best of the best from a
variety of talent agencies, 3.
Listen to the talent agent's "house" CD (a compilation of 1 minute
audio references of each of the actors they represent), 4.
Review the actor's voice over demo tape directly, and/or 5.
Rehire reliable talent they have worked with in the past.
What is a voice over demo tape? Your demo tape is your calling
card as a voice over actor.
It is the audio equivalent of an actor's head shot, and therefore
it is critical that the tape represent the essence of who you are,
so that a prospective buyer knows, just by listening, about your
vocal quality, age, attitude, style and personality.
Your voice over demo tape should run about 1-2 minutes and reflect
your "signature" (your specialty) which is the most natural arena
of performance for you, the actor, and the most effective category
for a casting director's consideration.
How competitive is the voice over business? Like any form of
acting, voice over is extremely competitive, particularly in Los
Angeles.
Because it is such a major market, and because so much of the
nation's voice over work is done from this city, there is more
competition here than anywhere else in the world.
Even voice over actors who have worked regularly in smaller
markets need to be in top form to be competitive in Los
Angeles.
For that reason, it is critical to have training in the techniques
and business practices in order to have a realistic chance of
booking work.
The Casting Society of America is the premier organization of
theatrical Casting Directors in film, television, and theatre.
Although it is not a union, its members are a united professional
society that consistently set the level of professionalism in
casting on which the entertainment industry has come to rely.
It's more than 350 members are represented not only in the United
States, but also in Canada, England, Australia and Italy.

Born in Berkeley during the Summer of Foreplay (1966), to Betty
and Doug. D.C. developed a knack for acting through making creative excuses
for his dismal grades. He was then sent to study at the San Jose Music/Arts
Institute and perform with the San Jose Children's Musical Theatre, as well
as other local theatre companies in the late 70s and early 80s. This didn't
help his grades.
He moved to L.A. in 1985. After studying under (the late, great) Estelle Harman,
D.C. co-created the cynical improv troupe Section Eight, was a member of the
critically acclaimed Theatre of NOTE and continued acting in the L.A. theatre
scene, as well as film & TV throughout the 90s. In 1992 he started Hit
The Fan Productions in an effort to create inspiring projects that would deplete
his savings. This worked. His most recent project, Duck, Duck, Goose!, is currently
playing the festival circuit.
Want some "sizzle"? The Scholar (ABC), House of Clues (CourtTV),
E!, CBS, Mercedes Benz - They've all had the golden voice talent of D.C. Douglas
behind them, or over them. And if that isn’t enough sizzle for ya, here’s
some other folks whom he’s whispered sweet copy to. Okay, so it was a
little louder than a whisper. ABC, Comedy Central, Coca Cola, Fox News, Sony
Play Station, Lexus, HBO, WB & too many others to list. Hey, after 20 years
sweating in L.A. voice over booths and preening on film & TV, he can't
do anything else.
Are you a techno-weenie & wanna know what he’s got under the hood?
Okay, so it's not Star Trek but it makes his voice sound real nice.’

Jack! Reach out and touch him with any voiceover auditions or bookings!
Stop!! Hold the presses! Did we mention that D.C is an eighties man? This
video was born out of lethargy and nurtured through an obsessive compulsive
disorder. What you are about to see is, indeed, one of the most important music
videos of all time... (Yeah, bigger than "Let's get Physical") If
you already saw it, we know how you feel. We'd hug you if cyber space had arms.
But you can get solace by sending this link to everyone you know! Eighties
Man must be seen to heal people.
