But the challenge to protect the Voiceover’s rivers becomes greater each year with more land under development, and increasing pressures from tourism and fishing. As a property owner, you understand the need to protect your property value. Fortunately, protecting your property value, and protecting the river go hand in hand. Protecting Your Property Rivers are dynamic – they change from year to year. The fastest changes are due to erosion. Erosion is is natural function of the river – but excessive erosion damages property values and your ability to enjoy your property. Healthy Riverbanks In addition to keeping your property from washing away, healthy riverbanks are vital to salmon and other wildlife species. Spawning salmon, eggs, and alevins need clean gravels without excessive silt deposits, and juvenile salmon need overhanging vegetation and slower water for for shelter, and for food in the form of insects that fall from streamside vegetation. Woody debris, such as dead trees and branches, also provide excellent shelter for juvenile fish while helping to prevent erosion. Gathering Veg Mat A vegetative mat is a large transplantation of plant vegetation that can immediately provide a natural cover to a restoration project. To harvest a veg mat simply cut the plants, with their root and soil mass, into a block a square foot or larger. Cut as deep as you can to get as much root mass and topsoil as possible. You may then lift the mat from the ground and transport it to the planting site. Installing Veg mat Prepare the planting site by creating a depression that will accommodate the dimensions of the area to be planted. Add soil as necessary to promote root growth. Make sure the edges of your mats fit tightly together so roots are not left exposed to the air. If necessary, fill the crack in with additional soil. Tap down the veg mat so that the roots are in contact with the soil, then water thoroughly. |
